How Can LA/PMs Contribute to Helping People Achieve Their Reproductive Intentions? An Analysis of DHS Data from 34 Countries (PDF, 2.9MB)
Long-acting and permanent methods of contraception (LA/PMs) remain unavailable and underutilized in many countries, despite their high effectiveness rates and low costs. Long-acting methods include IUDs and implants; permanent methods include male and female sterilization. Women with an unmet need for both spacing and limiting pregnancies would benefit from increased access to LA/PMs. Increasing the utilization of LA/PMs requires an understanding of current LA/PM users and how they differ from users of other modern methods, users of traditional methods, and nonusers. Based on a secondary analysis of the most recent Demographic and Health Survey (DHS) data for 35 countries and an analysis of current LA/PM users, this poster presents strong evidence-based information on the potential impact of expanded access and utilization by developing profiles of LA/PM users and estimating of potential new markets for LA/PMs. Developed for the International Conference on Family Planning: Research and Best Practices, Kampala, Uganda. (2009)

PRESENTATIONS

13 Ways of Looking at Unmet Need (PDF. 5.7MB)
13th Annual Global Health Mini-University, March 7, 2014, Washington DC.

2013 International Conference on Family Planning, November 12-15, 2013, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia

The Present, Past and Future: Malawi's Quest to Reach its MDG Family Planning Goal (PPT, 1.7MB)
Presented at the National Leaders Conference on Family Planning, Population and Development, Lilongwe, Malawi. (2012)

Pay ATTENTION to Reproductive INTENTION: Limiters Have Needs Too (PPT, 6MB)
RESPOND undertook a secondary analysis of DHS data for 15 countries in Africa as a subset of a larger secondary analysis done to explore the current state of long-acting and permanent method (LA/PM) use globally and look at who current LA/PM users are and how they differ from other modern method users, traditional method users, and non-users. Africa was chosen as a subset since it is the only geographic area where intention to use LA/PMs is greater than the numbers of women currently using them. This presentation is not about LA/PMs per se, however. It is instead about the millions of women in Africa, who want no more children and yet are unable to or do not use the most effective contraceptive methods to meet their intentions. Originally presented at the USAID 11th Annual Global Health Mini-University,Washington DC. (2011)

Originally presented at the 50th ECSA Health Minister's Conference, Kampala, Uganda. (2010)

(2009)

Contraceptive Security: Incomplete without Long-Acting and Permanent Methods of Contraception. (PPT, 3.8MB)
Presented at the International Conference on Family Planning: Research and Best Practices, this presentation uses a review of key contraceptive security (CS) documents (including national and regional strategies, CS literature, and the materials of organizations working in CS), as well as a secondary analysis of Demographic and Health Survey data to make the case for the explicit inclusion of long-acting and permanent methods (LA/PMs)-IUDs, implants, vasectomy, and female sterilization-in CS definitions, strategies, plans, and programming. (2009)
